What is CBP?

Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®)—is usually referred to as Clinical Biomechanics of Posture®—is a variation of chiropractic care whose overall goal the patient is to “correct posture.” This technique is taught primarily through seminars sponsored by its founder. Its official Web site describes it as “a more knowledgeable, comprehensive, systematic, scientific approach to chiropractic, that provides predictable results for patients and will contribute to building a more stable and successful chiropractic practice.”

CBP Technique looks to answer these 4 questions:

1)  Is there a normal alignment of the spine that provides for optimal function?
2)  Can that alignment be measured accurately and between multiple doctors?
3)  Can a spine that is not in optimal alignment be moved towards better alignment?
4)  Does that make an impact on a patient’s health in a meaningful way?
At our office, Lake Union Wellness we utilize the research Don and Deed Harrison who has done much of the meaningful research on spinal modeling.

How does it work at Lake Union Wellness?

What we have to do first is start with a conversation. What and how is this affecting you? How long has it been there? How bad is it? And then based on that information, if the story makes sense, we have to get an idea of what the state of the spine is. You can sometimes get a very vague idea by looking at the posture from the outside, but the only way to truly know what’s going on is to take Xray images. The next step is for the Doctor to determine what curvature exists, and the Doctor does this using a high level, very specific/accurate computer software to map out a spine using the patient’s x-ray films and measure the various angles at which they meet.

The treatment centers around the concept of “mirror image adjusting and traction” which is accomplished by “passing the patient’s abnormal posture through the normal position and stressing it into its mirror image or exact opposite posture”. So in a nutshell, if you have deviated too far one way from an ideal accepted position or posture, we “mirror” that position and bring you the opposite way, to move you towards a happy middle ground.

Who is it for?

To qualify for treatment and make sure you are someone we can help, patients undergo a thorough history, a postural examination and are screened for contraindications to adjusting and mirror-image traction. There are a large number of factors that go into developing a treatment plan (I.E. length of time the condition has been there, how far off the spine is from normal, age, the severity of discomfort, et cetera). But to give a general overview of care, the treatment plan is typically divided into 3 phases.

  • Phase I – It begins with “relief care” consisting of 1-12 sessions of spinal adjustments, trigger point therapy for muscle spasms, and/or message with a licensed massage therapist—all of which are commonly used by chiropractors who are not CBP practitioners.
  • Phase II – When “relief care” ends, CBP practitioners switch patients to “rehabilitative care,” which consists of weekly mirror-image adjustments, neck, and low-back extension traction, and “mirror image” exercises intended to modify spinal curvature over a longer period of time. Initial “rehabilitative” plans vary from person to person and can be a few weeks, to a few months.
  • Phase III – Once Rehabilitation has been completed to a satisfactory level, then discussions are had with the doctor and the patient regarding maintaining the changes. That typically involves both in-office and/or out of office approaches. It really depends on the person and their specific goals.

I want to do more research on CBP. Where do I go?

Awesome. We love that you want to do more research on your own so you can make an informed decision on what is the best approach for you and your loved ones. To learn more about CBP and to go more in-depth into the research, theory, and protocols.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to come into the office and we will have an honest and open conversation about it, answer any questions, and have a discussion if this would be the correct approach for you.

Free of charge… really.

The easiest way is to call us and set a time to sit down with the doctor at Lake Union Wellness. Call our wonderful staff and they will be happy to set you up.
